ABOUT US
December 2020, Founder, Cyvette Gibson, former Deputy Mayor of Monrovia and former Mayor of Paynesville became a candidate in District Number 9 for the Legislative Representative vacancy. During the campaign she had the opportunity to access communities beyond the tar roads. Engaging Liberia’s swamp communities, informal settlements, and the municipality enlighten our team on the challenges in Monrovia. We spoke to single parents (primarily women) head of households who fend daily for a hot meal and are unable to afford education for their child. We spoke to children who live in zinc homes, waterways, or by the wayside who simply desire education to have a better life. There was clear indication OIA was needed in this community to enhance the lives of fellow Liberians with great concentration on our future leaders.
Opportunities In Action was formed to enable economically challenged children to reach their full potential through education, so that they become future leaders and ultimately change their lives and their country for the better. We strongly believe giving back is essential to any society. Our organization strives to sow economic growth in Liberia, as “education is key” to a nation’s success. Please impact a life by educating a child.
Our team consists of scholars, community leaders and organizers who have vast experience in child development and interest in the human capital growth of our nation. They have years of experience working with various organizations.
WHY SPONSOR US?
78% of the residents in most Districts in Liberia are young people.
Many children come from single family households where a daily meal is prioritized instead of education.
Child street hawkers and peddlers are prevalent, since they assist in supporting the household.
Parents often educate their sons versus their daughters because they believe the girl child should remain home to care for the household and education isn’t essential for her.
There are large swamp communities which are densely populated. Children walk through the dangerous waterways which are infested with reptiles to get to and from school.
62% children does not have access to primary education.
The illiterate population in most of Liberia’s districts, specifically District 9, is: Males 509,914/Females: 912,725
Education is key to their development and allows them to break the vicious cycle of poverty.
The families live in informal settlements built with zinc. This is called a zinc shack.
Ensure limitations are at its minimum; therefore, helping to break the shackles of poverty in one of the poorest nations in Africa.
